William Penn & His Pals’ story is much like many others in the annals of ’60s garage: teens dig the ’64 Big Bang, form a band and run with it until they make it to vinyl. The psychedelic-tinged garage A-side of their lone 1967 single (under the name William Penn Fyve), “Swami,” gained notoriety thanks to its inclusion on Pebbles Volume 3, and the flip, “Blow My Mind,” is Diddley-inflected Stonesiness at its finest. The rest of their output (all from 1966) was equally memorable, including the jangly “Gotta Get Away,” the British Invasion offshoot “There I Go I’ve Said It Again” and especially the moody fuzz-organ romp “Far and Away,” which ranks in the upper echelon of ’60s garage. The band’s history is longer than their recorded legacy, as detailed in a nice insert. Confirming the group’s talent, organist Gregg Rolie went on to greater fame with Santana and another band that’s best left unmentioned. (Doug Sheppard)
