SILVER PUMPKINS – Psicofasico (Munster) 7” EP
Here’s an exact repro of a record so obscure few people outside of Bolivia knew it even existed until recently. The Silver Pumpkins’ four-song EP was originally released in Bolivia on the Psicofasico label—in 1969 according to Discogs, although the sound and the material date from a couple of years earlier. Four familiar 1966-67 songs are covered, starting with a terrific version of “Pushin’ Too Hard,” a steady stomp with a somewhat subdued lead vocal bolstered by spirited backups and a fine raspy fuzz guitar solo. The Pumpkins evidently had good taste as they also recorded a crude, driving rendition of the 13th Floor Elevators’ “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” They drag “Sunshine of Your Love” into the garage with vocals straining anxiously for the notes, guitars and bass bending in and out of tune, and drums pattering like squirrels scampering on a tin roof—it will put a smile on your face. They do a better job of getting to grips with “Purple Haze,” giving it a rough, garage treatment that works well. The back cover designates this one as a “Shake,” while the other three are “Go-Go”—please bear that in mind when you spin it at your next house party. (Mike Stax, UT#73)
